Heart Transplantation

Albany Med’s heart transplantation program is fully certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), New York State Department of Health, and numerous regional, statewide and national insurance carriers.

Clinical Dietician
Clinical Dieticians provide nutritional support and medical nutrition therapy to all patients.
For patients identified as high-risk, the Center offers transplant procedures performed by some of the most experienced specialists in the nation. A heart transplant review committee evaluates all potential patients and Albany Med works closely with regional organ procurement organizations to serve our transplant patients.

Before and after transplant and VAD surgery, patients receive care in a specialized Heart Transplant Unit from fully-accessible transplant physicians, as well as a trained and experienced team of nurses and therapists.

After hospital discharge, heart biopsies are performed by the same physicians on an ambulatory basis using local anesthesia. The typical outpatient heart biopsy visit is conducted in less than 90 minutes from admission to discharge.
