Ambulatory (Same Day) Surgery

During Your Stay

Visitors

Visitors are welcomed at Albany Medical Center South; however the family members and/or responsible adult companion who will be driving and caring for you at home are preferred for Ambulatory Surgery patients. Visitors will be asked to wait in the Surgical Waiting Area while you are in the Operating Room and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Your Surgeon will speak to your family here after surgery. Those waiting will be notified of your return to the unit. Also, for Ambulatory Surgery patients, one family member may stay with you until discharge. Visiting Guidelines for the Extended Care Monitoring Unit specify no more than 2 visitors per bedside, with visiting hours beginning upon the patient's arrival on the Unit until 8:00 p.m. Visitors will be admitted to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (Recovery Room) at the discretion of the nursing staff. Other than a parent staying with a child, there will be no overnight visitors.

Children's Visits

Children over the age of five (5) years will be allowed a short visit for in-patients (those staying overnight) only. Patients who arrive for surgery and leave the same day may have adult visitors only. We do not recommend that children accompany patients to the hospital. Children may not be left unattended at any time in the hospital.

Discharged

You will be discharged according to your Physician's directions. You will not be allowed to leave the hospital alone following administration of anesthetic drugs. For Ambulatory Surgery patients: do not operate machinery, drive a car or drink alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours following discharge. You will be given written instructions to follow. If you have any problems or questions after discharge, contact your Physician. In the unlikely event that your surgical or anesthetic procedure becomes unexpectedly prolonged or complicated, your Physician may arrange admission to the hospital.

Questions

The Nursing Staff will call you after surgery to find out how you are doing. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to call the hospital at 262-1200.
