Liposuction procedures vary depending on the extent of the liposuction, but they are typically performed in a few hours on an outpatient basis. Liposuction is performed through small incisions using a small tube and a suctioning machine. First, sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through the incision to loosen excess fat. The fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.
Once the procedure is complete, patients will most likely have to wear a compression garment over the treated areas. This helps to control swelling and compress the skin to the new body contours. A small tube is left in the incision site to drain any excess fluids. Swelling and some bruising may occur. Keep in mind everyone heals at a different pace. The most important step to recovery is to follow the specific recuperation plan outlined by your Albany Medical Center plastic surgeon.
