For women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts, breast augmentation surgery is an option worth considering. Also known as augmentation mammoplasty, the procedure involves using implants to fulfill the desire for fuller breasts or to restore the volume of breasts after weight loss or pregnancy.
Breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure. Your Albany Medical Center plastic surgeon will discuss with you the different areas of incisions to place the implants based on desired outcome. Implants are selected based on desired increase in size, but more importantly on breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type. After the incision is made, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle.

After breast augmentation surgery, soreness is expected. It generally lasts no more than a day or two. Patients are able to return to work within a few days after the surgery. Pain medications may be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. Dressings are removed within several days and replaced by a surgical bra. Stitches are removed in a week to 10 days. Breasts appear swollen for three to five weeks and will be sensitive to physical contact during this time.
