Pre-assessment

Every person considering weight loss surgery is required to go through a pre-assessment period of three to six months. During this assessment, a nutritionist evaluates the patient and provides individualized guidance on how to eat a healthful diet including all the nutrients the body needs. Because certain types of surgery change the way the body absorbs nutrients, it is important to eliminate foods high in fat and sugar and begin choosing foods that are easily digestible and nutritionally dense. Nutritionists also provide guidance and counseling on exercise. Candidates must lose 10% of their total weight during this pre-assessment period.

These changes are critical to successful weight loss before and after surgery. Patients are encouraged to attend Albany Med's weekly support groups before and after surgery.
