Surgery
Bariatric surgery is a tool that has proved successful in fighting severe obesity. There are two surgeries that can result in significant, long-term weight loss: gastric restrictive and malabsorptive procedures.

Gastric Restrictive Procedures
- Decrease the size of the stomach so a person feels full after eating a small amount of food.
Malabsorptive Procedures
- Alter the digestive process so fewer calories are absorbed.
These procedures can be performed via open surgery (through a six-inch incision) or laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery, through several tiny incisions -- including lap banding. Our surgical team also may employ the da Vinci robot for some procedures.
