STD/HIV Mini-Residency Program: Center for Health and Behavioral Training - Rochester


The STD Clinic in Rochester takes place at the Monroe County Department of Public Health, located at 855 West Main Street. The program is run by the Center for Health & Behavioral Training (CHBT). CHBT is part of the Community Services Division of the Infectious Diseases Division, Department of Medicine, and University of Rochester working collaboratively with the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine and the Center for Health and Behavior, Department of Psychiatry, Syracuse University. CHBT works closely with the STD/HIV Program of the Monroe County Department of Public Health. CHBT's mission is to bridge science and practice through training and capacity building to advance STD/HIV prevention and community health.

The mini-residency at the Center for Health & Behavioral Training- Rochester trains physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses offering up to 12 hours of free, hands-on CME. This CME experience can be used to assist you in becoming an HIV specialist. Candidates for this program must be practicing in New York as a licensed physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse. Participants will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program

Acknowledgement

The STD/HIV Mini-Residency is funded by the New York/New Jersey AIDS Education and Training Center (NY/NJ AETC) through the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Program Options

The program length is tailored to your availability and can last between one and two days.

Travel

A transportation, lodging and food stipend is available. The mini-residency coordinator will discuss travel needs with the applicant upon his/her acceptance.

Curriculum

 The clinical experience is:
  • Designed to build skills needed to provide appropriate STD/HIV screening and clinical services in a clinical setting.
  • Implemented by faculty from the Center for Health & Behavioral Training (CHBT). CHBT trainers have extensive experience delivering STD/HIV prevention interventions and medical care in clinical, criminal justice and community based settings. Clinical experts include the faculty of the Infectious Diseases Division and the AIDS Center at the University of Rochester.

Learning Objectives

 At the conclusion of this training program, participants should be able to:
  • Conduct a sexual history/behavioral risk assessment.
  • Conduct a selective STD/HIV screening examination.
  • Identify the STD/HIV screening tests recommended by CDC for various populations.
  • Collect specimens for STD/HIV screening.
  • Interpret the results of STD/HIV screening tests.
  • Prescribe or administer STD treatments according to CDC STD Treatment Guidelines.
  • Provide a brief behavioral intervention for STD/HIV risk reduction.
  • Provide or refer patients with STD/HIV for partner counseling services.

Clinical Modules
  • Clinical Module (up to 12 hours)
    • Clinical training takes place at the Monroe County Department of Public Health - STD Clinic in Rochester, located at 855 West Main Street, and is designed to build skills needed to provide appropriate STD/HIV screening and clinical services in a clinical setting.
    • Depending on your STD/HIV knowledge level, introductory or advanced clinical training is available. 
    • You may select one or two days of clinical training. We will tailor to your availability.
    • This training may be combined with another HIV mini-residency at the AIDS Center at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester during the same time period. If interested, please cite this on the application in the space provided. 
    • Your training coordinator will provide you with sources to access web-based self-study materials to further enhance your training. 

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) through the joint sponsorship of the Rochester Academy of Medicine and the University of Rochester Medical Center. The Rochester Academy of Medicine (RAM) is accredited by the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Rochester Academy of Medicine designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity
