HIV Medicine

Background
Since 1981, the Medical Center has been caring for patients with HIV infection who live in the 22 county area it serves. In May 1987, the NYS Department of Health designated Albany Medical Center as a regional AIDS Treatment Center, charged with the provision of a wide range of services to people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS. The designation as an AIDS Treatment Center allows for increased services, coordinated care, and a wider range of programs than would otherwise be available.

Mission
The Mission of the AIDS Program is to provide comprehensive services, including medical, dental, social, nutritional, psychological, educational and clinical research services, to both hospitalized patients and outpatients regardless of where they live or their ability to pay.

Goals
The goals of the program include the following:

  • To maintain and promote quality, accessible health care services for those who become HIV infected and live in the service area of Albany Medical Center.
  • To facilitate coordination of support services for all those who seek care, by working with community organizations that provide those services.
  • To provide education to staff, health care providers, and community members so that they may provide compassionate, competent, and appropriate care to people with HIV infection.
  • To contribute to the understanding of the human immunodeficiency virus and the management of the illnesses it causes; to contribute to research findings and the dissemination of results to the health care community.

Scope of Services
The AIDS Program provides a wide range of services on a 24-hour basis to people with HIV infection and AIDS. Services are provided to any person with HIV-related needs referred to the Medical Center, regardless of ability to pay. A case manager will assist patients in identifying resources available to them to help pay their bills, if needed.
