Women's HIV Videotape Initiative
A Strategy to Increase HIV Testing and Medication Adherence and Promote An Understanding of Women's Health Care Issues
This videotape initiative aims to assist correctional professionals by:
- Encouraging early intervention of HIV, and hence cost savings, by reducing the expenses associated with treating preventable complications of HIV disease.
- Enhancing HIV testing and medication adherence among women inmates, reducing the development of opportunistic infections and progression of HIV disease.
This videotape initiative can assist women inmates in:
- Getting tested for HIV by outlining HIV risk behaviors
- Coping with a positive diagnosis by emphasizing that HIV is a treatable, chronic disease.
- Understanding and listening to their bodies and pursuing treatment if indicated.
- Empowering themselves to take charge of their heath, including HIV and gynecological care.
Videotape Description:
The Women's HIV Videotape Initiative is comprised of two videotapes, designed to increase HIV testing among women inmates and educate them about HIV disease, treatment and women's health care issues.

- Understanding the HIV lifecycle by illustrating viral replication and its effect on the immune system.
- Learning the importance of taking ART consistently to prevent viral replication and resistance and promote wellness.
