Frequently Asked Questions
Questions & Answers About Donation
1. Will my medical treatment suffer if I am a donor?

Many individuals fear that once they are declared donors their own medical treatment in a hospital will suffer, because their doctor will be more interested in their organs than saving their lives. This is simply not true. Organ donation is considered only after every attempt has been made to save the life of the patient.
2. I have a signed donor card in my wallet. Will that ensure I am a donor?
In most cases, documentation such as a signed donor card or driver’s license is not available when the decision about donation needs to be made. The best way to ensure your wishes regarding donation are fulfilled is to join the NYS Donate Life Registry by enrolling online at the New York Stat Donate Life Registry. You should also share your wishes with your family so they are aware of your decision.
3. Does the donor's age or medical history matter?
Neither age nor medical history should stop you from making the decision to be a donor. The transplant team will evaluate each potential donor on an individual basis.
4. How are donated organs matched to recipients?
When there is a donor, information such as blood type, age, height and weight are entered into the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. The system searches for the best-matched recipient for each available organ. Organs are matched with patients waiting for a transplant, both locally and nationally. Sex, race and financial status DO NOT influence the selection. Patients are selected on medical urgency and time on the waiting list.
5. Will donation affect funeral or burial arrangements?
Every healthcare professional involved with donation is aware of the magnitude of the gift being given, and the donor’s body is treated with the utmost respect and dignity. A highly skilled surgical team will remove the organs and tissues in a sterile room in the hospital, leaving the body intact for burial arrangements, including an open casket funeral.
6. Will the donation cost my family anything?
Absolutely not. The donor's family is never billed for any costs related to donation.
7. What about my religious beliefs?
All major religions fully support organ and tissue donation and consider donation an act of charity and love.
