Dr. Stain Elected Vice Chair of American Board of Surgery Board of Director
ALBANY, N.Y., August 14, 2007 - Steven Stain, M.D., chair of the department of surgery at Albany Medical Center, has been elected vice chair of the American Board of Surgery's Board of Directors.
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. Surgeons certified by the ABS, known as diplomates, have completed a minimum of five years of surgical training and successfully completed a written and oral examination process. The ABS currently certifies surgeons in the following fields: surgery (general surgery), pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, surgical critical care, and surgery of the hand. The ABS is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
As chair of the department of surgery, Dr. Stain oversees the clinical, educational and research missions of Albany Medical Center's department of surgery. Dr. Stain, who is trained in general surgery, has a special clinical and research interest in liver and pancreatic surgery as well as public health. He joined the staff of Albany Medical Center in 2005 after having served as professor and chair of surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville Tennessee. Prior to joining Meharry, Dr. Stain was an associate professor at the University of Southern California Medical Center, where he also served his internship and residency and performed a fellowship in surgical critical care. He received his medical degree from the University of California Irvine.
Dr. Stain will become Chair of the ABS's Board of Directors in 2009.
