Stem Cell Researcher to Receive Distinguished Alumnus Award from Albany Medical College

ALBANY, N.Y., April 28, 2005 - Bruce R. Blazar, M.D., professor and Andersen Chair in transplantation immunology at the University of Minnesota and member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1978, will receive the Albany Medical College's Distinguished Alumnus Award at the annual alumni reunion weekend April 29 and 30, after delivering the 13th annual Distinguished Alumnus Lecture. Dr. Blazar will present "Therapeutic Applications of Hematopoietic and Non-Hematopoietic Stem Cells," at 4 p.m. Friday, April 29 in room ME-700 at Albany Med. The Distinguished Alumnus Award honors an alumnus who has earned national recognition for outstanding leadership in health care. In addition to his aforementioned appointments, Dr. Blazar also serves as professor in the division of pediatric bone marrow transplantation, director of the cytokine reference laboratory, and director of pediatric bone marrow transplantation at the University of Minnesota, where he has served since completing his postdoctoral work. Dr. Blazar is currently the principal investigator on eight federally funded National Institutes of Health research grants focused on the areas of transplantation immunology, bone marrow transplant, acute myelogenous leukemia and graft vs. host disease. He has authored more than three hundred publications and is a member of numerous scientific committees including the FDA Advisory Committee on Biological Response and numerous NIH study sections. The lecture is free and open to the public.
