Albany Med’s Dr. John Balint Receives “Living the Legacy” Award
Albany, N.Y., October 30, 2012 – John A. Balint, MD, professor of medicine and founder of the bioethics program at Albany Medical College, has been honored with the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center’s 2012 “Living the Legacy” award.
The award recognizes individuals who have exhibited a strong belief in education as a tool to a better life, who believe that social justice and fairness are paramount to a just society, and who reach out to adversaries to find common ground.
“Through his nearly 50 years at Albany Med, Dr. Balint has shown his commitment to these values,” said David Shippee, president and CEO of Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center. “His compassion, tolerance and civility make him a fitting recipient of this award.”
Dr. Balint joined the faculty at Albany Medical College in 1963 as head of the Division of Gastroenterology. He became chair of the department of Medicine in 1981. Fourteen years later, he developed the Center for Medical Ethics Education and Research (now the Alden March Bioethics Institute). In 2002, his achievement in bioethics was recognized when the John A. Balint Chair in Medical Ethics was created.
“I am obviously enormously grateful for this honor, but I think it’s largely recognition of the benefits and presence an ethics center has had on the community,” said Dr. Balint. “I’m delighted that something that I did because I thought it was clearly necessary that our students learn about these things has spread to the community.”
Dr. Balint was recently honored at the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center’s annual Legacy Event luncheon.
