Sports Medicine Physician to Chair USA Rugby Medical and Safety Committee

ALBANY, N.Y., July 27, 2012—Hamish Kerr, M.D., sports medicine specialist and primary care physician at Albany Medical Center and a physician at Capital Region Orthopaedics, has been  named chair of the USA Rugby Medical and Safety Committee. He also serves as team physician for the U.S. Rugby Team and is director of medical services for Siena College’s athletic teams. Dr. Kerr will be an integral part of the planning process as rugby becomes an official Olympic sport at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.

Dr. Kerr, who played rugby in high school and as a medical student at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, is recognized internationally as an expert in rugby-related injuries. The Medical and Safety Committee was created by USA Rugby as a resource to help ensure awareness of national and international sports medicine issues, particularly as they relate to rugby and other Olympic sports.

As chair of the Medical and Safety Committee, Dr. Kerr will bring his international experience to the table. “I have worked with many of the world’s rugby team physicians and have developed knowledge of the sports medicine literature as it pertains to rugby,” he says.

One of the biggest challenges the committee faces is preventing catastrophic injuries, particularly spinal cord injury. Dr. Kerr will attend the International Rugby Board’s medical conference this fall, and plans to train the U.S. medical team on best practices in field-side care to prevent this rare but devastating injury.
