Albany Medical College Appoints Associate Dean
ALBANY, N.Y., June 10, 2009—Ingrid M. Allard, M.D., has been appointed associate dean for community outreach and medical education and associate professor in medical education and pediatrics at Albany Medical College. In this new role, Allard will be responsible for directing community outreach activities for medical students, assisting in curriculum development, and overseeing diversity, cultural competency, and inclusion initiatives that will aid in the recruitment of students and faculty.
“Albany Medical College has built a strong reputation of providing a culturally diverse, community focused educational experience to enrich students’ medical education and instill a sense of compassion and life-long commitment to community service,” said Vincent Verdile, M.D., dean of Albany Medical College and executive vice president for health affairs at Albany Medical Center. “Dr. Allard’s unique ideologies and professional background will only enhance this important mission. We are thrilled that she has joined us to devote her energy and leadership to this ongoing educational priority.”
As part of her role, Dr. Allard is responsible for overseeing existing community outreach activities such as the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) and the community medicine elective, as well as cultivating new community partnerships. “The determinants of one’s health are not just medical,” said Allard. “It is important to teach medical students to consider all parts of a community that may affect one’s health, such as finances, poverty, education and habits, and to address these issues as well.”
Additionally, Allard will serve as a mentor to both students and faculty, providing personal guidance to students and career advisement to faculty in accordance with the Sosa Academy of Medical Sciences—a concept unique to the Medical College that encourages and rewards faculty for excellence in educational leadership, curriculum development and reform, and mentorship.
Dr. Allard previously served as community and preventive medicine course director and assistant professor of pediatrics at New York Medical College in Valhalla. Additionally, Dr. Allard served as site director of the pediatrics clerkship at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, assistant professor of clinical public health in the School of Public Health and medical director of Child Welfare Services at the Westchester Institute for Human Development. She received a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California, and received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She completed a pediatric residency at the Unified Program of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Albany Medical College, founded in 1839 as one of the nation’s first private medical schools, trains medical students and provides continuing medical education programs for area physicians.
In addition to medical degrees, the College also offers master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral programs in the basic sciences as well as master’s programs for nurse anesthetists, physician assistants and bioethicists.
