Melodies of Christmas Concert Series Passes $7 Million in Lifetime SupportALBANY, N.Y., May 30, 2014—Price Chopper, Freihofer’s Baking Company and WRGB CBS 6, presenters of the Melodies of Christmas, were honored at Albany Medical Center for their ongoing support of the annual holiday concert series to benefit the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at the Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med.
The event has raised nearly $7.1 million in the last 34 years in support of the region’s only pediatric cancer care center. Today, representatives from the event’s three founding partners presented a check for $266,604.73 from the 2013 series to officials at Albany Medical Center.
“The overwhelming success of this concert series can be directly attributed to the wonderful and sustained partnership of Albany Medical Center, CBS 6, Freihofer’s and Price Chopper,” said Vikramjit Kanwar, M.D., director of the Melodies Center. “Not only do the holiday concerts they produce each year provide great memories for all who attend, but they attract large and appreciative audiences who are a testament to the community’s continued support of and generosity toward the Melodies Center. On behalf of our patients and their families, we are grateful to all involved.”
Debuting in 1980, the Melodies of Christmas four-day concert series, which features the Empire State Youth Orchestras and Chorale, has become one of the Melodies Center’s biggest fundraising efforts. A holiday tradition for the more than 10,000 who attend each season, tens of thousands more tune in to the 90-minute special on WRGB CBS 6 and the Capital Region’s CW, which airs annually on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The Melodies Center comprises a staff of five pediatric hematologists/oncologists, highly trained chemotherapy nurses, pediatric social workers, child life specialists and the support of all of Albany Med’s pediatric medicine subspecialists. Annually, there are more than 5,000 visits to the Center for care for a wide range of cancer and blood disorders. The funds raised by the Melodies of Christmas help underwrite health care staff and a variety of child cancer services at Albany Med.
The 35th annual Melodies of Christmas will be held December 18-21, 2014, at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady.
