Naming of the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center Announced

ALBANY, NY, May 28, 2014 – In recognition of gifts to Albany Medical Center totaling $25 million, The Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center has been named “The Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center,” it was announced today by James J. Barba, president and CEO of Albany Med.

The donor of $25 million, including a record $15.5 million gift last fall, remained anonymous until today when the benefactor was disclosed: “The Bernard and Millie Foundation,” established by the son of Bernard and Millie Duker -- William Duker of Westerlo and New York City, his wife Sharon and their son West.

“This is a landmark day in the history of Albany Medical Center, and on behalf of the 8,000 employees of the Medical Center and the thousands and thousands of infants and children cared for at the Children’s Hospital, I offer a heartfelt thank you to the Dukers – past and present,” Barba said.

The gift was made in honor of William Duker’s parents, the late Bernard and Millie Duker, whom Duker described as “humble and hard-working” lifelong residents of Albany.

“It was inspired by my parents’ love of children, especially my four brothers and me. It reflects their commitment to the health and safety of all young people. But the magnitude of the donation also underscores the importance of this world-class children’s health care facility to the region – and to the many, many children and families it serves every day, every year,” William Duker said today, before unveiling the new sign for The Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.

The gift will allow renovation of space adjacent to the children’s facility and allow it to continue to provide the special brand of care it is so well known for – “a brand that recognizes that despite illness, these young patients are still children and need, if for only a moment or two, to enjoy childhood and forget, if possible, that they are sick,” Barba said.

Established in 1986 to recognize the fact that Albany Med’s pediatric services had grown to include all of the programs normally found in a free-standing children’s hospital, today The Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital stands as the region’s only true children’s hospital. It has become a lifeline to children and families in the 25 counties served by Albany Med, allowing children to be treated here in Albany by world-class physicians with access to the most current treatments and technologies.

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 734-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with more than 400 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
