Medical College Alum Appointed to President’s Bioethics Commission

ALBANY, N.Y., April 13, 2012—Lisa M. Lee, Ph.D., M.S., a 2011 graduate of the Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) at Albany Medical College, has been appointed executive director of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.

The Bioethics Commission, established by President Barack Obama in 2009, is an advisory panel of the nation’s leaders in medicine, science, ethics, religion, law, and engineering that advises the president on bioethical issues arising from advances in biomedicine and related areas of science and technology. As executive director, Lee will help identify and promote policies and practices that ensure scientific research, health care delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in a socially and ethically responsible manner.

“It is an honor to serve in this capacity,” Lee said.  “I have watched the Commission from afar and have admired how its members identify and address issues that arise from advances in medicine, science and technology. These issues have the capacity to touch each of our lives in very personal ways and I’m grateful that the education and training I received at AMBI has helped prepare me for this next important step.”

Lee, who received a Master of Science in Bioethics from AMBI and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, has been with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 1998, most recently serving as chief science officer in the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services.

“We at the Alden March Bioethics Institute are thrilled to have contributed to Lisa’s education in bioethics,” said Bruce White, D.O., director of AMBI. “We congratulate her on this remarkable achievement and commend the commissioners for selecting such a highly skilled and qualified individual for this very important position of service to our nation.”

One of the pioneers in providing bioethics in medical education, the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College was founded in 1993 to provide medical ethics education, develop an ethics consultation service, and promote high quality, useful research and scholarly works on important ethical issues. The Center’s programs include coursework in medical ethics for Albany Medical College students, an on-site and online master’s program in bioethics, and a Scholar’s Program in Bioethics for medical students. Information about AMBI is available at www.amc.edu/bioethics.
