For National Doctors’ Day, Patients Honor Albany Med Physicians
ALBANY, N.Y., March 28, 2014 – To mark National Doctors’ Day, patients and their families are paying tribute to the Albany Medical Center physicians who provided exceptional and compassionate care to them during difficult times in their lives.
Submitted in response to Albany Med’s Honor Your Doctor initiative, Albany Med has received touching tributes detailing physicians’ expertise and the respectful and empathetic care they have provided to patients and families alike.
Albany Med’s more than 400 physicians represent the full range of specialties and subspecialties and collaborate to treat patients with conditions ranging from the simple to the most complex. As both practitioners and members of the teaching faculty at Albany Medical College, they treat patients using the most current and sophisticated techniques and technologies available.
Here is just a sampling of patient stories about Albany Med physicians:
Lewis Britton, M.D., Department of Surgery
"My daughter was born with a life threatening heart defect. On January 31, 1995, Dr. Britton performed a total reversal on my daughter saving her live, and giving her a chance at life! Thanks to the dedication of Dr. Britton and the entire Albany Med team I now have a beautiful, 19-year old college freshman who is loving life. And thanks to you, Dr. Britton, for inspiring me to be an Albany Med employee (15 years!)."
Scott Dexter, M.D., Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
"Dr. Scott Dexter saved not only my life, but my premature daughter's life. We both were in high danger. I was very sick and my baby was having problems. Within minutes of seeing him, Dr. Dexter made the right choice to save both of our lives. I will never forget him, his team and everything Albany Med did for my baby and my family - and lastly my own life.”
Vikramjit Kanwar, M.D., Department of Pediatrics
“In my eyes, Dr. Kanwar walks on water. He said he would have our daughter in remission in a month and he did. He knows what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. Cancer dealt us a bad hand, but he, along with his whole staff, has healed our daughter, as well as us, over the last year. He is nothing short of amazing!"
Edward Lee, M.D., Department of Surgery
“I can’t begin to thank you for the expert care you’ve given me over the past four years... You have an amazing gift, and though the circumstances that brought me to you were less than ideal, I wouldn’t change anything. You’ve given me my life back, and that is truly priceless. Thank you!”
Ashit Patel, M.D., Department of Surgery
"Dr. Ashit Patel is a champion! He has seen me through a very lengthy set of surgeries and healing...a clear and effective communicator, he treats patients with respect and intelligence, making patients feel like partners instead of subjects. His sense of humor and amazing listening skills make him approachable with questions, ideas, explanations and discussions. A true healer, counselor, teacher, inspirer and sage, Dr. Patel connects at the highest level and creates the space for healing and growth with ease and grace…Most important of all, his professionalism, competence and expertise make him the best of the best."
Mary Christina Whyte, M.D., Department of Surgery
"Dr. Whyte performed emergency surgery on our six day-old little boy. It's been almost two years since she saved his life. We think of her every day when we see his scar and thank God for her."
National Doctors’ Day, recognized nationally on March 30 each year, is a day for patients to express gratitude to doctors who have provided outstanding care. Albany Medical Center’s “Honor Your Doctor” initiative, which corresponds to National Doctors’ Day, encourages patients to share their life-changing stories, as well as honor an Albany Med physician by making a gift in his or her name. Honorees are presented with a “Champion” lapel pin that signifies medical excellence and serves as a “thank you” for being a “champion” to their patients.
