Albany Musician Featured in Albany Med Advertising Campaign

ALBANY, N.Y., March 11, 2013—Robert Girouard, a professional drummer and music industry writer from Albany, is appearing in Albany Medical Center’s current multimedia advertising campaign promoting its neurological services.

Girouard, 60, underwent a leading-edge treatment known as deep brain stimulation (DBS) at Albany Med to treat his worsening symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, a progressive and disabling condition that causes problems with movement including shaking, stiffness and loss of muscle control.

DBS involves the implantation of an electrode in the area of the brain that controls movement. The electrode is then connected to a battery in the chest, much like a pacemaker. Girouard was treated by Julie Pilitsis, Ph.D., M.D., the region’s only neurosurgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in DBS, and neurologist Adolfo Ramirez-Zamora, M.D., a specialist in Parkinson’s Disease and movement disorders.

DBS transformed Girouard’s life. He resumed drumming and recently reunited with his band Urban Gumbo.

Girouard appears in TV commercials and print ads that ask, “Who Gave Bob his Beat Back? The Answer is Albany Med.”

To speak with Girouard, please contact Albany Med Public Relations at 518-262-3421 or email Sue Ford at fords@mail.amc.edu.
