Albany Medical Center Seeks Volunteers for Antioxidant Study

ALBANY, N.Y., January 28, 2010—Doctors at Albany Medical Center are seeking volunteers for a study to examine the effect of natural grape antioxidants on bladder function in men. Research currently suggests that antioxidants (such as grape seed extract) can neutralize free-radicals, protecting the body from cellular damage, and improve bladder function. Welch’s Concord grape juice is the form of antioxidant being studied.

To participate in the 12-week randomized study, candidates must be male, over the age of 45, and currently experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms. Such symptoms include urgency, frequency, weak stream, or nighttime voiding. To be eligible, candidates cannot have prostate cancer and cannot be currently taking the medication Coumadin. Participation includes four visits to Albany Medical Center over the course of 12 weeks for treatment, evaluation, and dispensing of the grape juice versus placebo.

For more information or to become a candidate, contact the Urological Institute Research Office at 518-262-8579.
