Richard P. MacDermott, M.D., Receives National Lifetime Achievement Award

ALBANY, N.Y., January 27, 2012—Albany Medical Center’s Richard P. MacDermott, M.D., received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) at its annual meeting in Hollywood, FL. The award recognizes Dr. MacDermott’s “commitment, dedication and extraordinary contributions” to advancing research and education in inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as his care of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients.

Dr. MacDermott is the Thomas Ordway, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Medicine and professor of medicine at Albany Medical College, and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Center within the Digestive Disease Center at Albany Med. He has published over 120 scientific articles on the role of the immune system in inflammatory bowel disease, plus over 80 review articles and chapters.

Dr. MacDermott has played many roles within the CCFA and other national organizations, including chair of the CCFA’s National Scientific Advisory Committee. He is the founding co-editor of the journal Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. In addition, he received the Mentor's Research Scholar Award from the American Gastroenterology Association in 2007 and the Master Award from the American College of Gastroenterology in 2008.

Dr. MacDermott has been with Albany Medical Center since 1978. He earned his medical degree at Ohio State University and performed residencies at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, as well as fellowships at Boston University and the Dana Farber Cancer Center. He and his wife Martha have four grown children and eight grandchildren.
