Albany Med Turns Out Big for a Cause
Theresa Weinman and Barbara Smith, RN, set out to assemble Albany Med’s largest team ever for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October.
And in doing so, the American Cancer Society reported, they fielded the largest team at this year’s event as well: Albany Med’s 230 walkers — not counting all the family dogs that came along to the event in Washington Park in Albany — raised more than $7,500 for cancer research.
“Our team was made up of survivors, newly diagnosed women, family and friends who have been touched by breast cancer, as well as dozens of physicians, nurses and staff who care for them here at Albany Med,” said Weinman, administrative coordinator in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
einman and Smith, a certified breast navigator, co-chaired the effort for Albany Med.
Overall, more than 15,000 walkers turned out in Albany, raising nearly $1 million.
Getting into the Halloween Spirit
Young patients were treated to a Halloween party by Spirit Halloween stores, which have raised more than $74,700 for the Children's Hospital over the past seven years.
The retailer’s “Spirit of Children” program focuses on making hospitals less scary for kids and their families. Its goal is to raise $5 million this year, bringing its total contribution to hospitals across the United States and Canada to more than $16 million.
