Community Matters


Filling a Need
Spurred by a commitment to help feed the hungry, employees of Corporate Finance’s Elsmere office recently conducted a drive for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, an Albany Med community partner. Here, Robert J. Piparo, director of financial operations, prepares to deliver the donations to the Latham headquarters of the Food Bank, which supplies 25 million pounds of food to 1,000 agencies in 23 counties annually.

“We appreciate Albany Medical Center’s commitment to helping us alleviate hunger and are particularly grateful because over the summer donations tend to fall off,” said Bob Baker, the Food Bank’s farm and food sourcing coordinator, noting that hunger remains a serious issue in the region. He also pointed out that the 169 pounds of food from the Elsmere office is the equivalent of 150 meals.


Kids Helping Kids
What do kids from Saratoga County bearing Girl Scout cookies, pinwheels and pencils, books and bubbles have in common? They all contributed to bringing some happiness to our young patients in The Children’s Hospital.  Girl Scout Troop 3126 (at left) in Saratoga Springs sold Girl Scout cookies and hosted other fundraisers, donating their proceeds to The Children’s Hospital along with gift bags filled with arts-and-crafts materials for patients. Meanwhile, middle-schoolers from St. Edwards Church in Clifton Park remembered two friends, former Melodies Center patients, Luke Romano and Nick Cammarata, by collecting books, coloring books, crafts, pens, crayons, pencils, notepads, pinwheels, bubbles and video games as well as a new Wii for kids in the Melodies Center. Pictured in photo (right) are from left, Albany Med’s Angie Silipigno, child life specialist, Janice Nicoll, Middle School coordinator, and her son, Matt. “We are always humbled by, and so grateful for, the generosity of our community’s children and teens,” Silipigno said. “It means so much to our patients that other children were thinking of them and gathering items to make their time here more comfortable — helping to distract them from their medical care and offering opportunities to play and have fun.”


‘We know STEM’
Just ask Albany Med President Jim Barba and Ahmed Lachgar, a student at the Albany Academies. They “starred” in a television commercial to promote the importance of STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math). The ad, shot in the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center, is part of series that features leaders from education and business in the region; the ads are running on WNYT  Ch. 13 in September.
