Pediatric Endocrinology

Areas of expertise include:

• Children who experience problems with growth and pubertal development, thyroid disorders, and adrenal disorders
• Children and adolescents with hormone disorders and/or require hormone replacement therapy, which often occur after cancer and brain tumor treatments
• Children with genetic disorders like Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome
• Children with diabetes who may require state-of-the-art care in insulin replacement therapy, nutrition counseling, and psychosocial adjustment to living with a chronic disease

The Albany Medical Center Advantage
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at Albany Medical Center is a referral center for the New York State Congenital Hypothyroidism and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Newborn Screening programs.

• Congenital hypothyroidism occurs when a newborn does not make enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is essential for normal brain development and body growth. Early treatment of congenital hypothyroidism prevents mental retardation.
• Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a disorder that affects the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. If the diagnosis is not made early newborns with this condition can become ill and die. Early diagnosis and treatment are lifesaving. Newborns that test positive on newborn screening are diagnosed and treated in our division. These children are treated and growth and development are followed from birth to adulthood in our division.
• Linda Riddick, MD is the Co-Director of the Congenital Hypothyroid and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Newborn Screening Programs. Dr. Riddick is also the principal investigator of the division and is involved in clinical research studies evaluating growth and growth disorders. The division is dedicated to the clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of children with growth disorder.
