Message from Chair Dr. Richard Blinkhorn
Welcome to the Department of Medicine, where you will find the most innovative services in the region carried out by esteemed physicians who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. I am quite proud that we provide the very best, highest quality care to the people of our region because our talented physician faculty is on the forefront of medical developments in all areas of care. We provide highly regarded physician training programs, and our physician graduates extend our expertise, as they become physician leaders throughout the region.
Under our Department’s umbrella are the clinical, educational and research activities in the Divisions of Allergy and Immunology, Cardiology, Clinical Nutrition, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, General Internal Medicine, HIV Medicine (including the area’s only state-designated AIDS Treatment Facility), Hospital Medicine, Infectious Disease, Medicine-Pediatrics, Nephrology, Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Rheumatology.
Our staff of more than 180 physicians includes the region’s most highly trained, board certified medical specialists who not only care for patients but who conduct research, teach medical students, residents, and fellows (positions in our residency and fellowship programs are highly sought after), and serve as members of prestigious national medical societies. Our faculty’s research findings and scholarly articles have been published in the most elite professional medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association. Our accomplishments are many and too numerous to list in this message, but of recent note include:
- A physician receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America
- Advanced national certification in treating heart failure
- One of the nation’s top physician/researchers in the field of sarcoidosis leading our pulmonary team
- Our Digestive Disease Center receiving national accreditation for providing top care
- One of the nation’s select few designated cardiology programs for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation
- And, the establishment of a multidisciplinary Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic
This all means that at Albany Medical Center patients have access to all of the benefits that only an academic medical center can provide, including physicians in various specialties that work in synchrony to ensure every patient’s individual needs are met. Graduates of our training programs gain diverse, in-depth experience, and go on to provide high quality medical care in communities throughout Upstate New York and beyond.
