Since its founding in 1839, Albany Medical College has grown from one of the nation's first private medical schools into an integral part of Albany Medical Center - the only academic health sciences center in the 24 counties of eastern New York and western New England. Joined within a single complex, Albany Medical College and the 631-bed/20-bassinet Albany Medical Center Hospital combine resources to provide the area's 2.7 million residents with advanced services in a full range of specialties and subspecialties.
The variety and complexity of cases at the Medical Center provide rich learning opportunities for our academic community. The Center's dynamic atmosphere allows you to explore specialty and subspecialty areas, to discover which field interests you most, and to obtain a high level of training in that area.

The Albany Medical Center recently completed a $10.6 million emergency department reconstruction and expansion project, making the facility one of the most advanced emergency care facilities in the nation. Designed to maximize patient support and privacy, the new facility consists of four "mini-emergency rooms" within the larger facility, with areas specifically designed for trauma, critical care, pediatrics and minor emergencies. The facility serves as northeastern New York's only Level 1 trauma center and sees more than 60,000 patients a year, up from 40,000 just a decade ago.
The Schaffer Library of Health Sciences affords you easy access to its extensive collection. Additional materials from local, regional, and national libraries are also readily available.
A daily courier service between the College and several neighboring institutions fills local inter-library requests quickly. Several databases, including Medline, MD Consult, Web of Science, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews, Micromedex and WebCat are available for quick searches through the most current literature. As part of the curriculum, the library staff will teach you how to utilize new technology and information management skills.
The Independent Learning Center in the Library houses audiovisual material and interactive, computer-assisted instructional resources. The Center includes a computer lab with 40 PCs, multiple software programs, and Internet access.
Exciting new living and learning opportunities are on the horizon for Albany Medical College students and their neighbors.
University Heights Commons, a combined campus serving students and staff of four neighboring colleges and schools, will be the outcome of a unique partnership and plan that is well underway.
Albany Med, Albany Law School, Albany College of Pharmacy, and The Sage Colleges have the buildings and property needed to develop a myriad of appealing spaces and places:
- A renovated state armory featuring a 150 room hotel and a conference center hosting symposia, workshops and lectures on topics such as health care and the law, ethics, public policy and education; the armory will house a spacious bookstore and a café. A community center will be created, in order to provide other student-centered facilities such as a print/copy center and a bank branch office.
Students and staff are already benefiting from these features of the Commons:
- A student-housing complex, offering comfortable, apartment-style living to students.
- Courtyards, lawns and pathways on the freshly landscaped grounds of the Commons, ideal for dining alfresco, tossing a Frisbee, walking or just relaxing.
- A running track, athletic playing fields, and newly renovated, fully equipped gymnasium.
