Visiting Students

ELIGIBILITY:
The Albany Medical College (AMC) cordially welcomes visiting medical students into our fourth year elective program. All applicants must be a student in the FINAL year of medical school, be in good academic standing and have the parent school's approval to participate in the desired elective. No student may take more than a total of eight (8) weeks elective time during the academic year. Visiting students are not accepted into AMC required clerkships.

REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must complete the "Application for Visiting Student Elective" form for any desired electives.

A completed application form, copy of applicant's medical school transcript bearing the school seal, completed health forms and letter of recommendation from the Dean (or the Dean's designee) must be received by this institution before the applicant will be considered for placement.

Documentation of immunization and titers are required against the following infectious diseases: Chicken pox (varicella), mumps, rubella and rubeola (MMR), tuberculosis (proof of 2 negative skin tests, 2nd test must be placed and read within 1-3 weeks after the 1st test and these tests must be done within one year of date of elective) and hepatitis B (positive titer). Proof of a complete physical examination performed within one year prior to the start of the elective is also required.

All visiting students must be covered by medical malpractice and health insurance through their parent institution.

Elective rotation dates must coincide with the scheduled dates of AMC's elective periods

Choices for elective rotations should be listed in order of preference.

Foreign medical students must receive certification from the New York State Education Department before beginning a rotation at AMC. Information regarding this process may be obtained from Mr. Thomas Monahan, State Board of Education at (518) 474-3841.

Foreign medical students' parent school must submit a letter attesting to the student's use of written and verbal English sufficient to communicate with patients, medical faculty and others.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The senior year at the Albany Medical College is primarily elective in nature and our students may choose from a variety of subspecialty experiences. We may not always be able to accommodate students from other institutions, however all applicants are given individual consideration and every effort will be made to comply with each request. Beginning in May, applicants will be considered for electives at AMC. Applications will be considered only after all requirements have been met. All arrangements are made through the Office of Academic Affairs. Room, Board and Meals are not provided by AMC.
