Admissions

Students apply for admission to the Graduate Studies Program by sending an application to the Office of Graduate Studies. If an applicant has a clear interest in one of the Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs) at Albany Medical College, this should be designated on the application, along with selected faculty members from that IRG whose research the applicant finds most interesting. Program directors of the IRGs then arrange for an applicant interview tailored to the applicant's specific interests. Alternatively, students who aren't sure which of the training programs best fit their interests may request an interdisciplinary interview process. In this process, applicants designate on the application the faculty members and areas of biomedical science, which most appeal to them. An interdisciplinary interview is arranged for these students, permitting the applicant an opportunity to speak with the faculty and program representatives from the various training programs which best fit the applicant's interests. Following this interdisciplinary interview, the applicant will be asked to identify a single IRG training program that they feel best aligns with their goals and interests. Acceptance is then granted by the Graduate Committe of the selected training program, followed by the Recruitment and Admissions Committee of the College. Upon acceptance, all students matriculate into one of the four IRG training programs.

The applicant must arrange to have the following materials forwarded to the Office of Graduate Studies:

all official transcripts of courses taken at the college and university level;

at least two letters of recommendation from undergraduate and/or graduate instructors or from employers;

the completed application form;

scores of the GRE; and

scores of the TOEFL (if applicable).

All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), prepared and administered by the Educational Testing Service, Box 592, Princeton, New Jersey 08540. Upon recommendation and approval of the Recruitment and Admissions Committee, the GRE may be waived for applicants with doctoral degrees (M.D., D.D.S., D.Eng., etc.). The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an equivalent examination is required of all foreign national applicants from non-English speaking universities or countries. Foreign applicants must also complete the International Applicant Supplemental form available from the Graduate Studies Program Office. (Admissions requirements for the Nurse Anesthesiology Program can be found in the Clinical Science Division section.)

Admissions to the Graduate Studies Program is open to students who have successfully completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent academic degree. Applicants must have completed coursework in and demonstrated a high degree of competence in biology, organic chemistry and mathematics through calculus. To be competitive for admission, advanced courses in biology and/or chemistry, as well as research experience, are all recommended. Early application is encouraged. We recommend that applications be submitted and completed by mid-March.
