Vascular Surgery Fellowship

The Vascular Institute at Albany Medical Center (AMC) has eight attending staff members and five interventional radiologists.

The institute is supported by one physician assistant, administrative assistants, several secretaries, an editorial assistant, and six vascular laboratory technologists. There is excellent computer support for the section; a large registry for clinical data is maintained for the Practice.

The institute has close relationships with the sections of trauma and transplant in the Division of General Surgery, as well as with the Divisions of Cardiothoracic, Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery within the Department of Surgery. Extradepartmental support is also derived from close working relationships with Divisions of Cardiology and Nephrology from the Department of Medicine.

The Vascular Institute at AMC has a regional reputation as a referral resource serving a very wide geographic area. As such, many patients are referred for complex peripheral revascularizations, as well as for the management of acute and elective aortic repairs.

The primary focus of the education of vascular surgery residents is clinical activity at AMC, whereas general surgery residents are instructed in vascular surgery at all of the integrated hospitals of the AMC program. This division of experience allows maximal opportunity for the vascular surgery resident without detracting from the clinical experiences available to senior general surgery residents.

Residents are selected for the program in general vascular surgery through the NRMP matching protocols. At any time, there are two residents at AMC in the two year accredited fellowship.
