Curriculum

Residency training at Albany Medical Center is designed to teach residents the basic principles of diagnostic radiology and how to apply these principles to more advanced modalities. Thoughtful appreciation of evolving developments in the field of diagnostic radiology helps guide the curriculum. The program is based at Albany Medical Center and the adjacent Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center.

First Year
A two month didactic orientation introduces incoming residents to the fundamentals of diagnostic radiology. This course and the concurrent clinical rotations are geared toward preparing the resident for emergency on call responsibilities. Two daily conferences further enhance the new residents' training. Additionally, they will have weekly reading assignments covering general radiology, augmented by film review sessions to survey the breadth of radiology.

Second Year
Residents assume greater responsibilities as their experience and abilities grow. Residents are expected to teach and mentor medical students. Investigative research is encouraged and supported during the second year and beyond.

Third Year
Chief residents serve during their third year. In addition to administrative duties, chiefs function as the liaison to both program director and department chair. All third year residents spend six weeks at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Radiology Pathology Correlation Course in Washington, D.C. Housing and registration are paid by the department.

Fourth Year
In addition to standard rotations, fourth year residents spend a dedicated month on maternal-fetal ultrasonography at Bellevue Maternity Hospital in nearby Schenectady, New York. The balance of rotations is determined by each resident in order to meet his or her individual needs. Fourth year residents attend board review courses at the expense of the department.
