Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Description of Program
The primary goal of the residency program is to provide a clinical and educational experience that prepares the resident to responsibly care for patients requiring the service of a physiatrist. The Department recognizes and attempts to fulfill its responsibilities to participate in research and writing and to provide any resident or medical student at the Albany Medical College with an interest in research with the opportunity to work in cooperation with the faculty.
Residents are sent only to institutions with full-time, in-house faculty. The expectations of the affiliated institutions are:
- All work done by the residents is to be reviewed and signed by the faculty.
- Residents are never responsible for patient care or on-call without appropriate supervision by the faculty.
- Residents are given progressive responsibility in accordance with their experience and development.
- There must be adequate time devoted to teaching.
- Resident' training is to be planned based on the needs of the resident and the requirements of the ACGME and the Board of PM&R. Resident training is not to be based on the financial or professional needs of the faculty.
- An evaluation of each resident must be sent to the Program Director at the completion of each rotation. The Program Director is to be notified immediately of any major problems at the discretion of the Chief of Service of the affiliated institutions.
- Residents always are to be treated with respect. Constructive criticism should be given in the office of the faculty, not in front of the allied health professionals.
