Primary Care Experience
Our pediatric residency program offers a strong and continuously growing primary care component. Primary care training consists of a continuity clinic and ambulatory electives. Each resident spends one full day in continuity clinic under the guidance of our general pediatric faculty. Through the continuity clinic, residents develop their own patient panel and have the opportunity to be the primary care physician for these patients from birth onward, including hospitalizations.
Other outpatient ambulatory training is mulitdisciplinary and varied. This includes a community health elective, rotations in adolescent medicine, behavior, development, and community preceptorships with private pediatricians, HMO's and pediatric clinics. Residents also spend two months on a general ambulatory pediatrics rotation where they perform newborn examinations, make rounds in the newborn nursery, learn telephone triage skills, and handle sick visits in the hospital-based practice. Through these electives, a foundation is developed for excellence in pediatric primary care.
