Albany Medical Center
The Region's Only Academic Health Sciences Center
Albany Medical Center is the only academic health sciences center in the 25 counties of eastern New York and western New England. It is guided by a strategic commitment to providing the region's 2.8 million residents with high-quality medical education, biomedical research, and patient care. It comprises Albany Medical College and the Albany Medical Center Hospital. Joined within a single complex, the two components combine resources to provide advanced services in an extensive range of specialty and subspecialty areas.
The variety and complexity of cases seen at the Medical Center provide a rich learning environment for its academic community of medical and basic science students, residents, and fellows. In addition to housing a state-designated Level I regional trauma center, a state-designated Level III regional perinatal care center, and a state-designated regional AIDS treatment center, Albany Medical Center maintains a comprehensive bone marrow transplantation program and the Children's Hospital. A hospital-within-a-hospital, the Children's Hospital provides the only child cancer program in the region.
The Medical Center also maintains an important commitment to primary care. The medical student curriculum, for example, focuses on primary and comprehensive healthcare. Our Primary Care Network provides primary care services to communities throughout our service area.
Albany Medical Center recently completed a $166 million facility development program, resulting in one of the most technologically advanced tertiary care facilities in the nation. The program included the construction of a seven-story patient tower, as well as the expansion of our Emergency Department, surgical suites, and radiation therapy center.
The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center
A Hospital-Within-A-Hospital
The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center maintains all programs typically found in a free-standing center. Its 125 beds are dedicated to the seriously ill and injured children living in the 25 counties of eastern New York and western New England.
Each year, over 2000 pediatric patients stay in the Medical Center's pediatric intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, and general pediatric unit. Premature and seriously ill infants receive life-saving care in our state-of-the-art NICU and newly renovated PICU. Our PICU, Child Cancer Program, and the Pediatric AIDS Program are the only ones of their kind in the region to offer innovative therapies for life-threatening illnesses.
The Children's Hospital is also the primary training site for both our pediatric and internal medicine-pediatric training programs. It trains residents from other programs as well, including emergency medicine, family practice, and anesthesia. The Hospital also provides a dynamic educational forum where many of the region's pediatricians can obtain specialized training in the unique health needs of children.
