Ophthalmology Alumni News
A Publication of Albany Medical College

Our New Academic Center
This spring marked the opening of our new academic facility, including a state-of-the art conference center, a small kitchen, dedicated space for our residents, and offices for the Lions and for the department's new academic coordinator.  We welcome Libby Guglin to this important position, which includes organization of both resident and medical student teaching activities.  We look forward to seeing alumni at conferences in the new facility.

Our Graduating Residents and Fellows
Joe Ciolino has begun a two-year fellowship with Claes Dohlman and the cornea division at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.  One of the more productive researchers in our residency program in recent years, Joe won the Albany Medical Center research award and the Fellow award from the Cornea Society.  He looks forward to a career in academic ophthalmology.

Tad Buckland has joined the North Idaho Eye Institute, a group of comprehensive ophthalmologists in Coeur d?Alene.  Tad and Audrey are happy to be back in the West and to begin his practice in this beautiful area.

Rob Eden, who completed his year with Michael Belin and Bob Schultze, has joined another ophthalmologist in Queens, where he will be focusing his private practice on cataract and refractive surgery.

David Mills, who completed his two-year fellowship with Dale Meyer and the Stasiors, has returned to Jacksonville, Florida.  He will re-join the practice he left to begin his subspecialty practice in oculoplastic surgery.

In Grateful Recognition
During the past year, the department has received grant support from Pfeizer, Porex Surgical, Genzyme, FCI, J and J, Quest Medical, Inspire, Alcon, IOP, Merck, Vista, and Marco, participants in the John Cetner Golf Tournament, the estates of Marvin Posner and Robert Dodt, and countless Lions clubs and individual Lions.  We gratefully acknowledge these donations to our research and education programs.

A Note from the Chairman
Last year's Alumni Dinner at Harrah's Las Vegas was an opportunity to catch up with old friends and to enjoy a great meal.  This year, by popular demand, our gathering will be a wine and beer reception at the Hilton Garden Inn, directly across the street from the Convention Center in New Orleans.  Please mark your calendars for Sunday, November 11, from 5:30 to 7:30.  There will be sufficient New Orleans specialties to serve as dinner, but those who choose will have time to spend the later evening elsewhere.   All former and current residents, fellows, and faculty are invited, with their guests.  Please send your check with the form on page BLANK so we can reserve your place(s).

Welcome to Our New Residents and Fellows

Brian Strickland is an Albany native and a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School. He spent his undergraduate years at Williams College, where he majored in biology, psychology, and neurosciences.  In college, he competed in swimming and water polo, and was named an Academic All American.  Brian worked as an OR technician at AMCH for a year before starting medical school at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical College.  He did his internship in medicine at AMCH.  In his hours away from work, Brian enjoys hiking, running, and biking.

Abe Sleem was born in Brooklyn, but spent his junior high and high school years in Jerusalem.  He was a chemistry and computer major at St. Johns University in Queens, where he earned the presidential scholar award with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average.  Abe was a medical student at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he did glaucoma research with Janet Searle.  He did his transitional internship at Maimonides in the Bronx.  Abe is newly married to a college administrator.  His hobbies including computer programming and electronics.

Kundan Nagi was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, but moved with his family to the capital region at age 5 and graduated from Shaker High School.  Kundan was a student in the 7-year Albany Medical College/Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute combined program.  He graduated from college magna cum laude with a biology major.  During medical school, he did research with Dale Meyer on sinusitis, with Rob Schultze on deep lamellar endothelial keratopathy, and with John Simon on Botox.  He teaches Indian music in religious education and enjoys tennis and basketball.

Richard Walker, who joined Michael Belin and Rob Schultze as a fellow in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery, grew up in Morristown, NJ.  He was a nutrition major at Cornell.  He then completed his DO at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  He was an intern in internal medicine at the University of Connecticut in Hartford and a resident in ophthalmology at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn.  Rick has his black belt in karate.  He and his wife Liz, a speech therapist, recently celebrated their third anniversary.  He looks forward to joining a group practice in New Jersey.

Rhonda Barrett, who joined Dale Meyer and the Stasiors for the first of two years as a fellow in oculoplastic and orbital surgery, hails from Oak Ridge, NC.  She completed her BS in biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MD as an AOA graduate of the same institution.  She did her transitional internship in Roanoke, Va and her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, where she did oculoplastic research with Michael Callahan and Matthew Vicinanzo. Rhonda and her husband Earl, a pharmaceutical representative, have a 9-month old daughter, Brooke.  She would like eventually to begin academic practice in North Carolina.

Special Recognition
Our annual resident dinner was held this year at the Colonie Country Club.  Our chief resident, Joe Ciolino, announced that the residents had selected Jaime Krepostman as the recipient of the golden apple award for teaching excellence.  The faculty presented the Robert Reinecke award for research to Joe Ciolino and the John Cetner good physician award to Steve Khachikian.  Congratulations to Drs. Krepostman, Ciolino, and Khachikian on these achievements.

Sai Gandham, who has recently assumed the responsibilities of Residency Director, announced at the dinner that John Simon had been elected to membership this year in the American Ophthalmological Society.  Established in 1864, this is the oldest American medical society, and membership is an honor accorded to fewer than 300 ophthalmologists nation-wide.  His thesis, "Preventing Surgical Confusions in Ophthalmology," will be published in its entirety in the Transactions of the AOS and will appear in summary form in the Archives of Ophthalmology.  John is the first AOS member from the Capital District.

Our Continuing Medical Education Program
This year's Albany Ophthalmologic Update was held on June 14 and 15 at the Desmond.  The program covered topics in cornea, oculoplastics, and pediatric ophthalmology.  The Henry Dubins lecture, "Current Management of Vascular Orbital Lesions," was presented by Mark Levine.  Other invited guest speakers included Evan Black, Gerard D'Aversa, Gregg Lueder, Irene Maumenee, Richard MacKool, and Henry Metz.  Joe Ciolino presented his research with Michael Belin on LASIK surgery.

Next year's AOU program is being organized by Sai Gandham, Jamie Krepostman, Marty Farber, and Dale Meyer, our CME director.  AOU 2008 will be held June 12 and 13, again at the Desmond hotel conference center.  Topics will include glaucoma, retina, and ocular pathology.  We also anticipate additional special teaching events in conjunction with the Eastern New York Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Society.  Further announcements will be forthcoming on times, topics and locations.   Community ophthalmologists are also invited to attend our regular Case Management Conferences, which convene at 6:00 pm on the second Tuesday of almost every month during the year, with buffet dinner provided.  These CMC meetings will be held in the new Lions Eye Institute conference room, at 1220 New Scotland Road.
