Research Opportunities
The Neurosurgical Laboratories contain 2900 square feet in dedicated laboratory/office space. These NIH funded laboratories have fully funded Ph.D.'s, technicians and neurosurgical fellows as support personnel and collaborators for the residents.
Ongoing projects and neurosurgical staff interests include:
- The role of the astrocyte in cerebral ischemia.
- Development of rodent cerebral ischemia models to test cerebral protective agents.
- Electrophysiological, ion fluxes, and transmitter uptake and release in astrocytes.
- Cell swelling and volume regulation in astrocytes.
- Studies on head injury models evaluating the therapeutic effectiveness of different agents.
- The effects of experimental head injury on cerebral blood flow.
- Developmental studies on glial cells and neurons in culture.
- Clinical research on outcomes analysis.
In addition to the interests of the neurosurgical faculty, residents may develop projects with other faculty in the neuroscience-training program.
