Neonatology Fellowship

The Albany Medical Center
The Albany Medical Center is the regional academic health science center in northeastern New York. The Albany Medical Center Hospital is the State-designated tertiary (level IV) Regional Perinatal Center for a 24-county region. It includes obstetrical and perinatal services and a Children's Hospital with a state-of-the-art 50 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center provides expert care in pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, including a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program. The Department of Pediatrics, chaired by David A. Clark, M.D., has about 40 faculty members and an accredited 3-year pediatric residency program as well as 4-year combined residency Internal Medicine/Pediatrics. The NICU admits more than 700 neonates each year, of which over one third are outborn.

The Neonatal/Perinatal Service
The Albany Medical Center Neonatal/Perinatal service is the regional referral center for high-risk obstetrical patients and critically ill neonates for an area with 30,000 births per year. There are ~2500 inborn infants annually, nearly 30% being from high-risk pregnancies. The Department of Ob/Gyn's high-risk obstetrical service accepts over 600 maternal transports while Neonatology provides ground and air transport services for about 300 neonates each year. Neonatology staff and fellows provide prenatal consultation to most high-risk families.

The NICU operates with a philosophy of family-centered care, currently supported by a March of Dimes Family Support project. On the technological front, capabilities include jet ventilation, high-frequency ventilation, and nitric oxide therapy.

There are 7 neonatologists on the full-time faculty of the Department of Pediatrics. All are actively involved in patient care and teaching with diverse clinical and research interests. A team approach to patient care incorporates the expertise of highly skilled NICU nurses (including Neonatal Nurse Practitioners), patient care coordinators and social workers, residents, the neonatal fellow and attendings. Emphasis is also placed on the education of house officers from Pediatrics, Medicine/Pediatrics, Family Practice and Anesthesiology residency programs.

The neonatology service provides delivery room coverage for perinatal/neonatal problems including prenatal consults, and consultative coverage plus urgent care in the normal newborn nursery, which is managed by General Pediatrics and area pediatricians.
