The Med-Ped Primary Care Practice
Our ambulatory office is located in Latham, a suburb a few miles north of Albany. It is staffed by the full-time Med-Ped faculty and by the residents who come to the offices for their "continuity clinics" and block rotations in primary care. The residents see their own panel of patients; among these are patients that the residents take care of during their hospital and Emergency Department rotations. Residents also help with the day's sick call. They are always under the guidance of a faculty preceptor.

The Department of Pediatrics: A "Hospital Within a Hospital":
The Department of Pediatrics consists of about 40 full-time faculty in general pediatrics and the various subspecialties, as well as allied specialties. They serve as the full-time teaching staff of the Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center--a "hospital within a hospital."

The Children's Hospital has over 2,000 admissions each year. Its generalists and subspecialists provide care at over 30,000 outpatient visits annually. It has a Level III regional perinatal care center, a sophisticated pediatric intensive care unit, and the region's only programs in child cancer, pediatric AIDS, and cystic fibrosis.

The Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine has over 70 full-time faculty members. The general internists schedule more than 11,500 annual outpatient visits and maintain busy inpatient and consult services. The subspecialists receive over 37,500 outpatient referrals annually, in addition to providing an extensive range of hospital consult services. During subspecialty electives, Med-Ped residents are involved in both the outpatient and inpatient aspects of subspecialty medicine. The Department of Medicine maintains the region's only comprehensive hemophilia program and bone marrow transplantation program.

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) for the Albany region is located across the street from Albany Medical Center. The Medicine faculties in both institutions often collaborate on clinical and research activities. The Med-Ped and Medicine resident experience is greatly enriched by rotations through the wards, intensive care units, and clinics of the VAMC.

Graduate Medicine Department
The Graduate Medicine Department at the Albany Medical Center serves to co-ordinate resources for all of the housestaff, fellowship and residency programs. Under the guidance of Dr. Joel Bartfield, and Carrie Eckart MBA, the housestaff and fellows of the Albany Medical Center participate in combined lectures series on the Business of Medcine as well as other issues. They also sponsor leadership workshops for chief residents not to mention providing picnics, parties and palm pilots for the residents!
