A day in the life...Experience
The Medicine-Pediatrics residents immerse themselves in the department where they have an assigned rotation. Except for the time spent in the Latham Ambulatory Clinic for their continuity clinics, they adhere to that particular specialty's schedule and attend its teaching conferences.
Rotations
The training in each specialty is intertwined and progressive. Residents switch between departments every two months (i.e., every two rotations). This tempo keeps their knowledge of each specialty fresh and reduces the anxiety associated with switching rotations. It also allows residents to experience both specialties during each season of the year.
The major focus of the internship is learning to take care of hospitalized patients. By the end of the residency, however, the major focus has shifted to the different, more subtle, and more difficult enterprise of caring for outpatients. Residents complete a wide variety of subspecialty rotations that stress the outpatient management of subspecialty problems.
Continuity Practice
All Medicine-Pediatric interns attend continuity practice one afternoon each week. MedPed residents attend two afternoons a week. All interns and residents are expected to develop a patient panel of their own. While continuity is encouraged, residents may not always be able to see only their patients.
