Program Design

The Albany Medical Center's Residency Program in Anesthesiology satisfies all the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and the Accreditation Committee of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) of the American Medical Association. The continuum of education in Anesthesiology as described by the ABA consists of four years of training. It includes 12 months of non-anesthesia clinical training (Clinical Base Year) and 36 months of graded and increasingly complex clinical training in anesthesia (CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3).

The structure of the Albany Medical Center's residency program in anesthesiology and the courses that are incorporated into the program are as follows:

Clinical Base Year

  • Internal Medicine Wards: 6 months (including MICU, CCU, VA ICU)
  • Emergency Medicine :1 month
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: 1 month
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: 1month
  • Pediatric Surgery: 1month
  • Vacation: 1 month
  • Electives: 1 month

    Note Electives: Choice of the following: Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Nephrology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Preoperative Clinic

CA-1 Year

  • Introduction to Clinical Anesthesiology: 2 months
  • Basic Anesthesiology Rotation: 5 months
  • Surgical ICU: 1 month
  • Advanced Airway Management: 1 month
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit: 1 month
  • Cardiac Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Obstetric Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Vacation and Sick Time: 20 days
  • Conference Time: 3 days

CA-2 Year 

  • Cardiac Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Obstetric Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Neurosurgical Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Pain Management: 1 month
  • Non-Cardiac Thoracic Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Pediatric Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • Regional Anesthesia: 2 months
  • Surgical ICU: 1month
  • Vascular Anesthesiology: 1 month
  • General  Anesthesiology Rotation: 2 months
  • Vacation and Sick Time: 20 days
  • Conference Time: 3 days

CA-3 Year
Residents elect and design their final year from the following choices:

  1. Pain Management 
  2. Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

  3. Obstetric Anesthesiology

  4. Research (limited to 6 months

  5. Clinical Anesthesiology with research emphasis
  6. Critical Care
  7. Pediatric Anesthesiology
  8. In the CA-3 year there are 20 days combined vacation/sick time and 5 days conference time allowed

Application Schedule
The deadline for applications is November 30th, for the following year's Match. All applications are made through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), and the NRMP Match.
