Educational Program

Didactic Teaching
The didactic teaching schedule thoroughly prepares residents for successful completion of  the American Board of Anesthesiology's written and oral exams.

In the CA-1 year, during the Introduction to Clinical Anesthesia, new residents attend an introductory lecture series on Wednesdays in July and August from 8:30 am to 4:30 PM. From September through June, all residents attend a didactic program on Wednesday afternoons  from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and Anesthesia Grand Rounds on Thursday mornings. In addition, there is a monthly Journal Club and Research Forum, as well as the quarterly district meeting of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, which residents are encouraged to attend.

During the CA-3 year residents must prepare a Grand Rounds presentation, which is designed to make the resident the local expert on a topic of his or her choice. Each resident must also prepare at least one poster for presentation at State or National Anesthesiology Meetings.

Evaluation and Exams
Residents entering the CA-1 (PGY-2) year are evaluated for successful completion of the Introduction to Clinical Anesthesia rotation (July and August CA-1) by attending anesthesiologists who conduct evaluations, a practical exam and a written exam. Thereafter, residents are evaluated quarterly. The evaluations are structured to comply with the American Board of Anesthesiology's standards as set forth in their guide entitled "Defining Competence in Anesthesiology." The evaluations are used as the basis for awarding Certificates of Clinical Competence as required by the ABA at the end of each six months of training.

Residents are required to take the Anesthesia Knowledge Test (AKT) at the beginning of the program, and after two-months, six-months, and eighteen months of training. In addition, all residents are required to take the American Board of Anesthesiology's In-Training Exam annually.

All residents participate in mock oral exams. These exams are structured in the manner of the American Board of Anesthesiology's oral exam and are a valuable learning experience.

Board Certification
Residents receive preparation for successful completion of the American Board of Anesthesiology written and oral examinations as part of the didactic teaching schedule.

Discretionary Funds
The Department of Anesthesiology provides funds for resident education that may be used for the purchase of textbooks or to defray the cost of education conferences.
