The inpatient rotations include: consultative service, inpatient service, MICU and SICU. The VA Hospital service includes a combined critical care, sleep and consultative experience. A number of electives are available and include thoracic surgery, CCU, PICU, sleep and allergy. A continuity clinic is maintained by each fellow and is scheduled for one afternoon each week.
The scheduled conferences include: physiology/research, case conferences, journal club, morbidity and mortality, didactic lectures by attendings and fellows, and a combined chest conference (pathology/chest radiology/thoracic surgery/oncology/nuclear medicine/pulmonary medicine). Graduate medical education lectures review genetics, biostatistics, bioethics, plus an overview of the legal and financial aspects of medical practice.
During the fellowship there is ample opportunity to attend national conferences (Cystic Fibrosis, ATS, ACCP) in addition to the Northern New England Pulmonary Fellows Conference.
Protected time for clinical research is available and commensurate with the individual fellow’s level of interest and commitment to a research project. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in teaching at the medical college by giving didactic lectures and bedside teaching to students, residents, physician assistant students, and respiratory therapy students.
