Albany Medical Center
Albany Medical Center is a 651-bed tertiary care center with a wide variety of subspecialties. The pathology encountered is diverse. The emergency department sees approximately 60,000 visits each year and is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center. There is a fully equipped eye room, with a slit lamp, indirect ophthalmoscope and much of the equipment and medicine needed while on call. There is also a 50-bed NICU where ROP screenings and treatment are performed by an attending and resident.The Albany VA is a 135-bed facility that boasts a truly state-of-the-art eye clinic. Approximately 14,000 patients are seen each year at regularly scheduled clinics in general ophthalmology, oculoplastics, cornea, glaucoma and retina. The clinic has access to optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluoroscein angiography, Humphry visual field and corneal topography, while the operating room boasts an Alcon Infinity phacoemulsification unit and the Alcon Accurus vitrector with 23 gauge capability.
The Albany Medical Center South Clinical Campus
South Clinical Campus is an outpatient surgical facility located one mile from the main campus. Many of the surgeries generated at the Lion’s Eye Institute and Albany Medical Center clinic are performed here.
The Lions Eye Institute
The Lions Eye Institute is an outpatient clinic in Slingerlands, NY, conveniently located less than 10 minutes from the Albany Medical Center and the VA. This facility, constructed in 2002, is home to many ophthalmologic subspecialties affiliated with the residency program and sees approximately 30,000 patients each year.
A well stocked wet lab at AMC with a surgical microscope, generously donated phacoemulsification unit, all necessary instruments and sutures provides ample time for residents to practice surgical skills. Routine donations of corneas are made by the local eye bank.
