THE DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of 21 teaching departments of Albany Medical College and is responsible for all undergraduate and graduate education in the discipline.  The Chairman is also the Obstetrician/ Gynecologist-In-Chief at Albany Medical Center Hospital, a 651-bed tertiary care facility.  The Obstetrical Service is located in the Labor and Delivery / Antepartum Perinatal Unit with state-of-the-art monitoring and computerized data retrieval and storage. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of 55 beds is located on the floor directly above Labor and Delivery. These units comprise the core of the Capital Regional perinatal program which serves 25 counties and three states.

The Department is organized into divisions; each headed by a Board Certified or subspecialty certified specialist. All major areas of obstetrical and gynecological practice and education are available.  The Divisions of Gynecologic Oncology, General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Urogynecology also provide regional referral services with active inpatient and outpatient programs.

St. Peter's Hospital, located approximately two miles from Albany Medical Center, is a 447-bed community hospital, and has been integrated in the education programs of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as many of the other major residency training programs at Albany Medical Center Hospital.  The program is fortunate to have the active participation of a large voluntary faculty, most of whom practice at both institutions. Twelve months of the four-year residency training program are conducted at St. Peters.  Combined statistics from Albany Medical Center Hospital and St. Peter's Hospital demonstrate the wealth of experience available to residents in our program.

In addition to the training noted above, all residents are trained to fulfill the role of providing primary health care to women of all ages.  Ambulatory medicine experience and the provision of primary care of emphasized throughout the program.  Residents are assigned a panel of patients for which they care for throughout their years of training.  Residents spend one half day per week in the continuity clinic.
