Please take a few minutes to read about our program and see why we are so proud of it.
The neurosurgical residency program at Albany Medical Center was started in 1946 by Dr. Eldridge Campbell. Dr. Campbell, a Walter Dandy trainee, became the Albany region’s first neurosurgeon in 1936. After leading the Albany Hospital Military Unit in World War II, Campbell returned to Albany where he served as chairman of surgery at Albany Medical College for 10 years. During his tenure, he formalized residencies in surgery and neurosurgery, and established the surgical research program, the first surgical research laboratory and the AOA Chapter at Albany Medical College. Since those early days, the Division of Neurosurgery has flourished and is now a component of the Neurosciences Institute, also comprised of the Departments of Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Psychiatry. This partnership has facilitated the cross-departmental collaboration based on diseases such as stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, brain tumors and spinal disorders. The Center for Neuropharmacology and Neurosciences is the research arm of the Institute. We offer first-class clinical facilities, physicians and scientists with expertise in all neuroscience specialties and nationally recognized education and research programs.
