Family Medicine

Requirements & Eligibility


You are eligible to apply for a position in the Family Medicine Residency Program provided you meet the following criteria:

All applicants must use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to apply to the Family Medicine Residency Program. No paper applications will be accepted.  Our program application deadline is December 31st. 

Dr. Mitnick serves as the Director of Medical Education for the Albany Medical Center Osteopathic Internship Program.  For more information please contact the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Intern/Resident Registration Program at www.natmatch.com. Applications are accepted through ERAS for the Osteopathic Match.

All applications to this program are to be submitted through ERAS. To apply for this program through ERAS you will be required to submit the following materials:

  • Photograph (optional)
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • USMLE scores of 80 or better are preferred on both Steps I and II, first attempt
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Dean's Letter
  • 3 Current Letters of Recommendation
  • ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)

Due to the volume of applications, you will be contacted only if we invite you to interview.
If your residency/career interests lie in Upstate New York or Western New England, we encourage you to spend some elective time with us during your senior year so that we may get to know each other better. Please contact Karen Frankenfield in our Family Medicine Medical Education Office at (518)262-5506 regarding available elective time.
If you are a foreign medical graduate you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have a J-1 Visa, We do NOT sponsor H1 visas
  • You must have a valid ECFMG Certificate
  • You must have one year of clinical experience in the United States, not including externships or observerships
  • We require three (3) letters of recommendation from US physicians
  • The admission committee looks favorably at board scores of 80 or greater, first attempt
  • Graduation from medical school is preferred to be within the last 3 years. We will consider earlier graduation year with subsequent residency/clinical experience

IMPORTANT: We cannot accept for residency any IMG with more than 12 weeks of clinical clerkship outside of the country of their medical school unless the person is a graduate from a medical school which has been approved by the NYS Education Department, (www.nysed.gov ) this is a New York State rule.
