The residency educational programs at Albany Medical Center are affiliated with the Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Peter's Hospital, the Capital District Psychiatric Center and surrounding community hospitals. This network offers residents a wide range of educational opportunities.
The two major hospitals Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's Hospital provide excellent ancillary services. There is ample secretarial staff to assist physicians in paperwork as well as full-time IV and phlebotomy teams. In addition, respiratory therapy will provide all respiratory care. There are multiple computers at each nursing station for access to reports and labs. Because of these and other ancillary services, the resident can concentrate on patient care and educational goals.
ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER
Albany Medical Center is the major referral center in northeastern New York and western New England, serving a 24-county area encompassing 2 million people. Albany Medical Center includes the 631-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital and Albany Medical College, which is the only academic health sciences center in northeastern New York.
ST. PETER'S HOSPITAL
St. Peter's is a 447-bed community hospital located approximately two miles from the Albany Medical Center. Many resident rotations are offered and include obstetrics, medicine, surgery (general, plastic, orthopedic and thoracic), family practice and otolaryngology.
CAPITAL DISTRICT PSYCHIATRIC CENTER (CDPC)
The Capital District Psychiatric Center (CDPC), a facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health, is a 225-bed institution located adjacent to the Albany Medical Center. CDPC offers mental health services for adults and children from a nine-county area. Residents in psychiatry and child psychiatry receive a portion of their training at CDPC.
ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL AND AMSTERDAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
St. Mary's and Amsterdam Memorial Hospitals are medium-sized rural hospitals in a nearby city where the Family Medicine resident works closely with an orthopedic surgeon in his office, at the hospitals, in the operating room and in the emergency room.
OUR LADY OF MERCY LIFE CENTER
Our Lady of Mercy Life Center is a 160 bed skilled-nursing facility located in a wooded setting in Guilderland, New York, several miles from Albany. The Family Practice Group provides the medical care for the nursing home, and patients requiring hospitalization will be admitted to our Family Medicine service at St. Peter's Hospital. Geriatric and wound-care teaching opportunities occur at OLOM for our residents.
ALBANY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
The Albany County Health Department provides public health and primary care for the County of Albany. Family Medicine residents rotate through the TB and sexually transmitted disease clinics. They also spend time with the public health nurses doing home visits.
SAMUEL S. STRATTON DEPT. OF VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL CENTER (DVA)
The Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center is located across the street from Albany Medical Center, the 634-bed DVA is a well-equipped facility that offers a wide variety of educational experiences. Residents in medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, radiology and surgery rotate through this facility.
COMMUNITY CARE PHYSICIANS, P.C.
Community Care Physicians, P.C. (CCP) is a private network of specialists and primary care physicians with offices throughout the Capital District. CCP offers a wide range of medical services but also works with local health care providers, hospitals and tertiary care centers to ensure the full range of care. The Albany Family Medicine Center is affiliated with CCP.
