Message from the Program Director

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Albany Medical Center, I welcome you to our web site. We are proud of our program, hospital, and area and hope that the web materials will give you insight into who we are and what we do. If you wish to discover more about us, please don’t hesitate to contact us at anytime.

The most important question I should answer for you is "Why Albany?"

Emergency Medicine Residency: Our program began in 1988 and was one of the earliest to begin training Emergency Medicine residents in the country. For you, this means experience. You will find experience to be a consistent theme here - Residency Coordinator, Faculty, Director and Associate Program Directors. There are years of experience, tremendous diversity, maturity, and more - all assembled to drive an Emergency Medicine training program to the highest level. This experience also gives us the flexibility to make changes to the program that reflect the educational needs of our residents, which is our primary focus.

Albany Medical Center: This is an exciting time for Albany Medical Center as we provide medical services to one of the largest tertiary care areas among United States Emergency Medicine residencies, approximately 1.5 million people. Most training programs will have a large tertiary care coverage population - typically 500,000-750,000 people. Albany Medical Center has no other tertiary care competitor in the vast majority of medical services for 150 miles in any direction. For the Eastern United States, this is quite unique. This large population base means you’ll see the most complicated, unusual, and rare diseases in medical training. These cases will be interspersed with the more common illnesses for patients across the spectrum of age and diversity.

Living in Albany: Albany, New York represents an historic place for a wide range of interests. The City of Albany has a wonderfully diverse population of individuals and cultures offering a broad selection of opportunities. Albany occupies a unique location on the Hudson River, nestled between the Adirondack, Berkshire, and Catskill mountains. This location offers a host of world-class culture, arts, and outdoor pursuits - all within a short distance. The Albany Capital District is a very welcome place for families as well with public schools that rank among the best in the nation. It’s all here in Albany, and at a price one wouldn’t find in our more famous competitors' locations.

We wish you the best of success in your emergency medicine interests. Come see us!
