Health and Dental Insurance
Three insurance plans and two dental plan are available to house staff members. They include:
- AMC Preferred Choice, a point-of-service managed care plan which includes in- and out-of-network coverage, as well as preventive care programs and prescription coverage
- Two Community HMOs
- Basic and Basic Plus Dental Insurance through Delta Dental
Life Insurance
Albany Medical Center provides life insurance to all eligible employees. For employees under age 65, the coverage is equal to two times their basic annual salary rounded to the next higher $1,000 (up to a maximum of $100,000).
In addition, the life insurance program includes accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits. If death results from an accident, the beneficiary will receive an additional two times his or her basic annual earnings.
Short-Term Disability Insurance
Benefits are paid for a maximum of 26 weeks of disability during a 52 consecutive week period.
The first seven calendar days of disability are considered a "waiting period." The beneficiary will not receive payments for these days from the Medical Center's insurance carrier. Beneficiaries are allowed to use vacation time during the waiting period. Short-term disability insurance benefits begin on the 8th day of disability with a weekly payment of $170.
Long-Term Disability Insurance
Long-term disability insurance is effective after a disability extends beyond six months. The program provides a monthly benefit of 60% of basic monthly earnings up to a maximum of $5,000. Coverage becomes effective after three months of employment.
Beneficiaries must apply for benefits. They are awarded if the applicant meets the definition of "disabled." Payments are awarded up to age 65, until the person returns to work, or until deathwhichever occurs firstif the disability begins before age 60.
Professional Liability Insurance
House staff members employed by Albany Medical Center are covered under the Albany Medical Center self-insurance program for professional liability claims arising out of the acts and omissions of such employees within the scope of their program activities at facilities operated by Albany Medical Center
The Albany Medical Center self-insurance program provides coverage on an occurence basis, with limits of $1 million/$3 million. As a condition of defense and indemnification, covered individuals are required to cooperate in the reporting and defense of claims. The program is administered by the Risk Management Department of Albany Medical Center.
Annual Health Assessments
State law requires that new residents and fellows have an initial physical examination and submit proof of measles, German measles, and varicella immunizations, as well as a TB skin test (in the last six months). Annual updates and self-assessment are performed by the Medical Center's Employee Health Service and are required for promotion. Missing immunizations are also provided by the Employee Health Service.
ACLS Certification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support is required for all residents and fellows. Certification and recertification are provided by AMC. If additional life support certifications are required by the program to which you are applying, these will also be provided.
Perquisites
The following are provided to all house officers:
